Part of Vale Inco’s Shaft Development and Construction Services contract, the Coleman Shaft Project located in Sudbury, Ontario, involved the sinking of a 6.4m diameter concrete lined shaft from the 582 ft level to the 4372 ft level. Initial site work on the project included the dewatering and rehabilitating of the ramp access. The existing station was slashed out and a push/pull ventilation system was installed. The scope of work included the design and construction of the entire surface infrastructure which had been removed in the early 1990’s.
The shaft was completed ahead of schedule and under budget, and with an excellent safety record.
