January 2010 Safety Message:
Turn the page in Safety from 2009 to 2010
Another year has come to an end and as we turn the calendar from 2009 into 2010 and look forward to another year of hope and prosperity for the company and all our employees, we must also turn one more page in safety. We cannot forget about the previous chapters we have faced in 2009 nor can we forget about our employees who injured themselves while at work in 2009. If we look back at 2009, we continued with our zero lost time injury frequency since late January, however our treatable injuries were continuing at the same frequency as compared to the end of 2008 with very little improvements during the first half of 2009. A lot of effort was put into safety by many across all our projects and head office, and through our management and supervision in early May, we asked our sites what’s working and what’s not……we asked for feedback. May and June were better months in terms of safety performance and in September we had our first zero treatable and injury free month for 2009. Since then we have had two more months, November and December as injury free across all projects and offices and only two medical aid injuries since August 17 th of this year and therefore our TMI frequency well below one (1) for this time period. The trend is fantastic and we need to carry this momentum forward into 2010.
All indications are 2010 will be busier than the past year and we expect more activity in our order book. We struggled in years past when we hired many new people into our company and our safety culture became diluted and we could not keep up. If there is one thing we can take forward into 2010 that is the lessons learned from previous years as we grew. We will experience similar growth again but this time we need to better prepare ourselves and be more proactive in injury prevention. If we look back, one lesson learned going forward is the importance of reporting all incidents and what it can mean in terms of us getting to zero. We launched a campaign at the end of 2007 for better reporting of all incidents and the results have been positive in terms of lost time injuries. We have realized that we can plan for our own safety achievements and the results will be reflective of our efforts going forward.
In 2010 we will adopt a few new initiatives to help establish our safety culture across all projects and employees. A new employee orientation protocol will be rolled out for all projects. Please make that personal commitment towards safety in 2010 and help us turn the page in safety.
