The Nickel Rim South Deposit Definition Project is owned and operated by Xstrata Nickel Limited and is located near Sudbury, Ontario.
The scope included the design and sinking of two shafts; a ventilation shaft of 6.1m diameter to a depth of 1680m, and a main shaft equipped with steel of 7.6m diameter to a depth of 1733.5m. Structured as an alliance contract, the project execution team and Cementation were integrated and focused on establishing contractual formats to align the goals of the contractor with the Owner. With a value in excess of $150 million CAD the project was the largest underground mine development contract in Canada at the time. Cementation’s engineering group carried out substantial design work on the surface plant including headframes and hoist houses, and received a national design award from the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction for the vent shaft headframe.
This project was recently completed without a lost time injury.
Cementation was also awarded the underground development on the project which includes the lateral excavation work to access diamond drilling horizons and the ore body.
